Data Protection

Privacy Policy

Data protection and data security are important to the association Tech against Violence and the Public Discourse Foundation (“we”), who operate the website digital-violence.info as a joint project. We process your personal data responsibly, in accordance with the applicable legal provisions and this Privacy Policy.

Scope of this Privacy Policy

In this Privacy Policy, we inform you about how we collect and process personal data when you use our website, visit our social media pages, contact us or make a donation to us.

Identity of the controllers

The following are jointly responsible for the data processing described in this Privacy Policy:

Purposes of processing

We collect your personal data in the following cases and for the following purposes:

  • Providing our services to you
  • Optimising the website (adapting the website to your needs)
  • Security measures, e.g. defending against and recording hacking attacks
  • Compiling usage statistics
  • Communicating with you (including sending newsletters; invitations to events; providing other information you request from us, e.g. via a contact form, when subscribing to the newsletter, when applying for a position with us, etc.; if you wish to make a donation; if you wish to be named as a donor)
  • Maintaining our contact list
  • Marketing and market research

Personal data processed when providing our services

In general: to provide our services to you, we process IP addresses, the date and time of access, information on the volume of data uploaded, forms, etc., and other information arising from the transmission protocol used (smtp, http, https, etc.).

If you use our website for information only: you can find out about us and our services on the website without telling us who you are. As with any connection to a web server, the server on which the website content is hosted automatically logs certain technical data and stores it for a short period. This includes the IP address and operating system of your device, the date and time of use, and the type of browser you use to access the website.

Where we carry out our own web analysis: we use web analytics services on the website to evaluate the use of our content and obtain information for its optimisation. In this analysis, the last bit of the requesting IP addresses is removed immediately. The web analyses contain only aggregated or otherwise sufficiently anonymised data. Only the respective provider can identify them on the basis of the usage data collected.

Where we use social plugins: the social plugins used on the website allow you to recommend and share our content on social media. You can recognise them by the logos of the respective social networks. When you interact with the social plugins, the providers of the social networks concerned collect and analyse usage data (e.g. the number of visitors and demographic information about visitors to our website). We receive analyses compiled on this basis from these providers. These contain only aggregated or otherwise sufficiently anonymised data. Only the respective provider can identify them on the basis of the usage data collected. Please therefore refer to the privacy notices of the respective provider.

Personal data processed for communicating with you, maintaining our contact list, marketing and market research

For these purposes, we process your name, email and postal address, telephone number, connection source and the content of communications exchanged directly between us, as well as information from third parties that you can no longer be reached at the address provided to us.

We are happy to keep you informed through our newsletter about current topics relating to Tech against Violence, the Public Discourse Foundation and the digital-violence.info project. When you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect the information you provide to us, including general personal data such as first name, surname and email address. You may tell us at any time that you no longer wish to receive our newsletter. To do so, please use the unsubscribe link at the end of the newsletter.

Where do we obtain personal data?

We collect this data directly from you.

Why do we store personal data?

We process your personal data in order to inform you about our services and to provide and document those services in accordance with our contractual and legal obligations (e.g. compliance with retention requirements).

How we store and protect your personal data

We store your personal data only to the extent and for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes described in this Privacy Policy or to comply with legal obligations.

To safeguard the integrity and confidentiality of personal data, we take appropriate technical and organisational measures. In line with our risk assessment, we implement in particular access controls and procedures for regularly reviewing, assessing and evaluating the effectiveness of these measures.

We delete your data as soon as it is no longer required and, in any event, once the maximum statutory retention period has expired.

Recipients

As a rule, we do not pass your data on to third parties. Where necessary for carrying out the joint project, Tech against Violence and the Public Discourse Foundation exchange personal data with each other.

Place of processing

We store and process your personal data primarily in Switzerland and the EU. To achieve some of the purposes described, however, it may be necessary for us to process your personal data in, or transfer it to, countries outside Switzerland and the EU. These countries are currently the USA and Canada. Transfers to countries without an adequate level of data protection are based on standard contractual clauses or statutory exceptions (e.g. necessity for the performance of a contract).

Your rights regarding your personal data

You have the following rights with regard to personal data concerning you:

  • The right to obtain information about which personal data we hold about you and how we process it
  • The right to receive or have transferred a copy of your personal data in a commonly used format
  • The right to have your personal data rectified
  • The right to have your personal data erased
  • The right to object to the processing of your personal data

Please note that these rights are subject to legal requirements and exceptions. Where legally permissible, we may decline your request to exercise these rights.

To exercise your rights, you can contact us at the contact address given above (Identity of the controllers).

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC).
